UMD CONDUCTING WORKSHOPS

Art of Band Conducting Symposium

July 7th - 10th, 2026

UMD Bands and the University of Maryland School of Music is excited to present our Art of Band Conducting symposium at

the University of Maryland from July 7th - 10th, 2026.

Conducting faculty members Michael Votta, Andrea Brown, and Craig Potter will be resident clinicians.

The workshop will focus on developing rehearsal strategies, score study and gestural
communication in a non-competitive environment. Participants will leave with
techniques and strategies that can immediately be used in the classroom.  This
symposium is tailored to middle and high school band and orchestra teachers, and first-
time symposium attendees are particularly welcome.

We do not have on-campus housing
options available, but there are many hotels in the area.

We will have conducting workshop masterclasses as well as sessions on conducting
technique, score study, rehearsal techniques, selecting appropriate repertoire and
programming.
